I was thinking just a little while ago about the previous post. Would they be considered drunken sailors? It's not the ocean they were sailing. They were mostly on steamboats or river barges. What did Mark Twain call them? I don't know I will have to think about that.

Well, one of the people on those riverboats was his brother, and there was an explosion on board. The guy got treated on shore by a doctor who OD'd him on I forget what, I think to treat the pain, supposedly, but he killed his patient. I read Twain's autobiography several years ago, and came away with, among other things, a higher appreciation for modern medicine.
